Can I hatch Triops eggs without detritus?

Hello, I’ve tried hatching a batch of triops eggs and used only distilled water, plenty of light and controlled temperature. 6 days have passed with no hatching so I’m assuming something went wrong. I read on some websites that very often Triops kits come with dry organic matter (usually leaves) that are supposed to provide baby triops with nutrition for the first few days. My kit did not supply this, so I used plain dry leaves from my garden. Didn’t work. Neither did my tank where I put fairy shrimp eggs (for triops food) and the exact same conditions as the triops hatching tank.

I started another tank for fairy shrimp eggs using only water and no dried leaves. Temperature, light and water quality were all highly controlled. Still no hatching after 4 days.

Where have I screwed up? Is it possible for ALL the eggs in my kit to be dead?

Fairy shrimp are freshwater and many people get them mixed up with brine shrimp which are salt water. You may have brine shrimp which are salt water which needs 1.5 table spoons per litre of water. I can’t find any fairy shrimp anywhere!

Triops eggs are very special as they can be dried out and when they are dry they stop developing. This is called diapause 1. They can last in this stop called suspended animation up to 7 years. When they are put back into water they are depleated or atmospheric air which triggers diapause 2 and begins hatching.
Sometimes the diapause 1 fails and it can’t get past that to diapause 2 which enables it to hatch so you will have to redry the eggs again and leave them dry for 2 weeks.
Eggs die when they are more than 7 years old but sometimes the eggs don’t get properly fertilised because triops are hermaphrodites. They have to fertilise their own eggs which could genetically weaken them but they do this in the wild and they are not human so this doesn’t really apply to them!
You can get some help from my Aussie friends at ‘littleaussieproducts.com/forum’ at the billabong bugs section! They are Aussie triops.

Tell me if I’m using too big words.

Im still trying to by my dad a gift for Christmas but im looking for something he could use for gardening..he likes to plant flowers and plants..definitely has one of the nicer yards in his neighborhood so does anybody know any nice ideas?

Hello Lady me,

I have been a gardener for sixty (60) years. I have nine rare fruit trees, a big vegetable garden, and a beautiful front and back yard with dozens of flowers. If your dad has one of the best yards, I am sure he has just about everything for gardening he needs. But I will give you a gift he will remember, and you will be very proud of. He will be in his garden the next day.

In order to maintain and keep a good garden, every great gardener should have one. His first words will be, “I always wanted one of these.” If you truly wish to see an unbelievable smile on your father’s face at Christmas, buy him a “PH TESTING KIT” for his soil. Believe me, your father will truly love it. It is something no one will think of giving as a gift. It will be a gardener’s dream.

http://www.Gardeners.com

This web site will give you an idea of what you are looking for. Type Ph testing kit in the “keyword or item#” search box on the upper right hand side. Then go to second page.

Cost: The cost can be anywhere from $7 to $100. They all work good. The more expensive will last longer. A nice one will cost about $20 at home depot or any good nursery. I can already see the smile on your face as he opens his gift from his daughter.

I hope I have helped. You have a great day, and I wish you and your family a happy holiday season, from Los Angeles.

Thank you!

A best answer will be chosen!

They have some good ones (such as by Sunset Press, Rodale Press, and Better Homes and Gardens) just inside the front entrance to hardware giants like Lowe’s and home depot. There is one by Ortho for Water Gardening that I just love! I bought it at either a Borders, Barnes and Nobel or Walden Books. Just look for the “Gardening” section, find an easy chair, and you’ll be there for awhile. Too, sometimes the bigger nurseries send out colorful booklets in the Spring to their former customers or the ones on their mailing list. Perhaps you can pick up one of these. They’re great for quick identification of various plants plus info as to individual sun/shade requirements, height and spread, price, etc.

Discover the Best Ways to Choose the Perfect Garden Storage Shed Plan

Need a place to store your yard accessories? Do you love to garden, but don’t have room for all the stuff? Then you should add storage shed to your garden. And yes, you could store your Gardening Supplies in your garage, but a storage shed provides distinct advantages over your garage.

First, you will separate the potentially harmful chemicals, such as fertilizers, in your shed and keep them away from children & animals. Second, you can create a space specifically designed for storing garden accessories, tools & equipment. Deciding which shed to choose can be overwhelming-one Google search for “garden sheds” brings up over 1.2 million websites!-so I have devised a checklist that will streamline your storage shed plan.

First, decide what type of material to for your storage shed; various types of plans exist to build a shed from scratch, or you can use the readymade sheds, also available in many different types of materials. Sheds have traditionally been made out of wood, but recently companies like Rubbermaid have been selling “click-together” sheds made from vinyl or plastic. Metal is a material to consider for your shed design, especially if you live in hurricane-prone areas, because it allows for a durability and protection not provided for by wood & vinyl. You can even choose a greenhouse for your shed design plans and keep growing plants all throughout the winter!

Second, you need to decide on the purpose for the shed-are you going to use it for storing small items like flower pots & gardening utensils? Then you should choose a small shed design; however, if you want to store a lawnmower, weed eater & other large tools, you should choose the larger shed design.

Third, consider your personal design style when choosing storage shed plan. Storage sheds come in a variety of architectural shapes that will compliment your home & outdoor design. A traditional gable roof style can provide additional storage for larger equipment such as bikes or pool supplies. A smaller, 20 cubic feet shed has a lift-top roof and provides smaller, more compact storage for lawn cushions & flower pots.

Fourth, when choosing a shed design, you want to consider the dimensions of the shed. Take into account factors such as the amount of storage the shed provides (small -20 cubic feet; large-400+ cubic feet), the interior dimensions & door opening (especially if you are going to store larger items such as a riding mower), the recommended foundation size for the shed (if the foundation has to be poured before installation), as well as if the shed comes with a floor. Before you install your storage shed, plan to contact your local code authority, as laws vary from state to state on if permits are required to build a shed.

Finally, consider the price. Garden shed plans can rage from $300 US to over $3000 US and your budget will determine which style, type and brand of shed you choose.

So in conclusion, when choosing a shed plan for your garden be sure to consider the sheds

1. Material
2. Purpose
3. Your personal design style
4. Dimensions
5. Price

If chosen properly, a garden shed can provide useful storage and satisfaction for years to come.
